Technical note: to knit the pentagon with double pointed needles I put three sides on three single needles, and two sides on fourth needle; so I used the last needle to work in the round. Work goes on with the central hole constantly narrowing just decreasing one stitch at the end of each section of the pentagon.

To show you the work in an intermediate stage I stopped exactly when I had every section on a different needle, and just while I was taking the photo, I saw the shape made by the needles… and I remembered of Pythagoras the genius! I realized I had a five pointed star!!
That symbol reminds the Italians of a notorious terrorist group…but it was a symbol of perfection to Pythagoreans, because it shows in its proportions the magic number phi (the well known golden-section).
I won’t get tangled in such a difficult subject, I suggest those of you who are curious to go here and here. (links to sites in English)

The golden-section is widely spread in nature, art and architecture. As spectators we are spellbound as we look both to a flower and to the Parthenon, because we feel a geometric harmony.
Are we influenced by aesthetical rules and cultural models, or is there anything deeper in our subconscious that asks us to prefer this divine ratio?
I don’t know, I only know I like the “swirled pentagon” a lot!

“cosa mia”

As usual coffee is my business.
I belong to a family of “caffettieri” i.e. fierce coffee drinkers who assert the theory, (not scientifically based, but well-suited to sustain the habit), that coffee is to brain what gasoline is to an engine!
As a high school student I made coffee for me and my parents after lunch (for us that was at 14:00)
As university student, my room was the meeting point …”nobody makes a better coffee!”…and I used to shock the barman ordering two cups of coffee and drinking them one after the other (sometimes I needed a cup of camomille tea as well…)
In three unusual situations I couldn’t tolerate coffee and gave it up: when I was pregnant with my two girls, and once when I experienced heavy working stress.
Don’t think I exceed a reasonable limit, my daily dose is not exaggerate, but good…and black!
Today I’m making more cups, one for me and the others for you…because coffee is a rite to be carried out with someone else, and helps to sustain us!…Any sugar?

Nothing compares to the softness, elasticity, lightness and scent of wool!
While knitting shell tank and luna rossa I verified how cables and fancy stitches are made more difficult by using a stiff yarn like cotton. Now I made up my mind, I don't care if it's hot, I come back to wool! I fished a beautiful color out of my stash, streaked like a black cherry ice cream, and I added few balls of white.
I started to knit the "Swirled pentagon pullover" by Norah Gaughan (I'm a bit obsessed...I know). At present there are no hitches and I'm having fun knitting the yoke in white using such pentagonal construction. I hope to take some pics while knitting with double pointed needles, it's a very interesting technique...(from my point of view, of course!)

I wasn't very pleased with the photos of my Brea bag, moreover a friend very keen on sailing suggested that my bag is really a "Red Moon"! I couldn't leave the chance to publish a better picture and to baptize the bag with a proper name, I will call it "Luna Rossa"!

Oracle’s prophecy
A day will come, or maybe it’s just arrived, in which an eclipse will darken everything. It will be a red moon eclipse, and will scare we all. Our wise ancestors used to say: “Red evening sky...hope for nice weather” .
Today even the most traditionalists among us believe:
“Red Moon in light of day...gets Oracle out of the way!"
4-1 sailing lover.

It is not my own work, but “Mr,YouKnowWho" ’s, who is often affected by sudden brainwaves! I only add some old photos on the subject. Readers from USA will understand our enthusiasm!:))

knitting is fun....sewing is dull

Lot of sewing to end the bag, and little fun...this is a bitter medicine that if not swallowed, would make previuos knitting useless!

Ordine

Today I did something wise and healthy...I tidied up my desk! Some weeks of growing entropy have passed, and I needed to embank the mess, so now I'm enjoing this little victory against chaos, hoping it will last another little.
Excessive dash in facing the deed, leads me to try the same even here.
I am moving all my photo albums in this post under the label "giri in giro" (something like "rounds around") to find them easily among skeins and needles!

It looks strange, but we found out that "Gluck road" (this name refers to a famous song about longing for countrylife ...) is very close to us, just along the borderline between Torino and Grugliasco. We dived into a country-atmosphere, even though there were some city-contaminations, we made a tour of Villanis dairy farm, taking part to the "Open dairy farms 2007" feast. I overwhelm you with photos....

Yesterday evening a company of audacious, made by two fathers and four kids of various ages, promoted and stood up for mothers enterprise to go out to cinema.
Having brilliantly gone through supper-traps and evening-amusement thanks to pizza, farinata, lego bricks, cartoons and chess, they all deserve our right and proper appreciations for their bravery!
-------------------------------------
Just for the record, movie title was “My brother is an only-child”. I appreciated subject, photography, the excellent performances of Angela Finocchiaro and Elio Germano. I am very pleased when a film succeds in involving me so much and offers both a smile and a small thought:
“you should grow up consuming and metabolizing(?) “ideas”...while nowadays we risk to grow up consuming and metabolizing only “goods”!
I related to the movie even my birth date, May 1968!

Tutorials

Some time back Daniela asked me for suggestions to have a better understanding of english knitting patterns and lexicon.
I found the site of Simply Knitting magazine, with PDF files dedicated to knitting (Essential guide 1-9) and crocheting tutorials (though photos are in poor resolution), containing a list of most common acronyms , and needle size conversion tables from american and english standards to millimetres.
I hope this will help those who want to catch the opportunity to use the huge amount of free english knitting patterns available on the web.

Even better! Follow Justine's hints and go here, here, and here too! while Zrinka leads you here!

Dubbio

Secondo me lo scivolo e l'altalena possono andare bene! Così sono...veramente fuori di me (...o forse sono davvero me stessa?)

I knitted this twin set last summer, it was a very long project, and this is the first chance to wear it and take some photos.
I'm really proud of my knits...but photos make me feel uneasy...so I have to play down the situation! I believe slide and swing can work! So here I am...beyond myself (...or maybe truly me?)

Addictive knitting

This is a kind of addictive knitting, once you start with it you have to go through to know how it comes out... it's hard to stop. Luckily you'll complete this work quickly, so your imagination can come true easily! In fact I was wondering how this cotton string could be when knitted in the fantastic shape of the bag...now I see it!
I found out the final resul is a bit different from the original pattern because I exchanged the decrease type in the triangular module I had drawn. However I like it, let's call it "free interpretation"!
If you prefer the original version you simply have to exchange the SSK and K2tog in the module.

"Lassala fa'..."

"Let her do it..." my granny Lina used to say if someone rebuked my awkward attempt to substitute for her while she was knitting or using her sewing machine.
Surely I tangled her skeins and slowed her work down but, if I think about it now, I believe she loved to share those moments with me, and turn her work into my play.
Now I remember her, and I let my skeins and my virtual webs get tangled by my girls.
This diary is a game we share, here you can find my knitting and many ideas and photos from my elder girl "Samberst".
So you will forgive our tangled skeins and kindly look upon our big and small masterpieces!

This is the my first post, but is also my first dress for puppet.
the puppet is a bear and his name is Tinky Winky(TW). For TW I made with the sewing machine a dress and the bandana.
To make the dress (blue) I had to adjust, because the fabric was short, but finally I managed to do it.
To make it more elegant I put an orange net on it.
I wrote the name of the bear and I put many pictures on the bandana.
